An attractive Bristol white
opaque glass Tea Caddy, circa 1765,
painted in the manner of Michael Adkins
with a bullfinch perched in a tree
beneath a puce cartouche labeled Green,
the reverse with a spray of flowers
including a rose, the sides and canted
corners with further sprays of flowers
and leaves, the short neck set with an
engine-turned gilt-copper cover
incorporating a contemporary enamel
with figures on a veranda, restored chips to
one corner, 13.2cm.;
For two similarly enameled tea caddies, see W. A. Thorpe, A History of English and Irish Glass, Vol. I, frontispiece. Both the illustrated caddies bear a finch on the front and ’swirled’ flower painting on the reverse. Both specimens (one from the collection of William Eakins, grandson of the painter, the other in the Schreiber Collection), are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
